Planning guide

What a Kenya safari costs, and why

Two safaris on the same route can differ a lot in price. Here's what drives the cost, so you can decide where to spend and where to save.

What affects the price

Season
Peak season (roughly July–October and the Christmas holidays) brings higher lodge rates and, in some parks, higher park fees. The green season in April–May is the best value.
Where you sleep
The biggest single choice. Budget camps, mid-range lodges and luxury tented camps can differ several times over for the same route.
Park fees
Charged per person per day by the park authorities, with different rates for citizens, residents and international visitors. On a multi-day safari they add up quickly.
Group size
The vehicle and guide cost the same whether two or six people travel, so per-person prices drop as your group grows.
Private or shared
Our safaris run in a vehicle reserved for your group. That means your own pace and stops, at a higher price than joining strangers on a shared tour.
Road or flights
Driving is cheaper and shows you the countryside. Flying to the Mara or the coast saves hours but costs more.
Trip length
Longer trips cost more in total, but fewer transfer days mean more time in the parks for your money.

Ways to get more for your money

  • Travel in the green season (April–May, November) for the lowest lodge rates.
  • Book early: some tours have an early-bird discount when you book well ahead. See current deals.
  • Travel as a group: sharing a vehicle with family or friends brings the per-person price down. Larger groups can ask for a group quote.
  • Mix lodge levels: splurge on one special night and keep the rest mid-range.
